Home Contents Cover
Many people vastly underestimate the value of their possessions, which may become a problem when purchasing Home Contents Cover. If you miscalculate the worth of your belongings then you may find that certain possessions will not be covered by your policy - which may be distressing if these belongings hold much sentimental value.
It is easy to remember to cover our overtly expensive items; such as, electrical equipment (hi-fi/radio, washing machine, computers, phones television and video/DVD players), large pieces of furniture and antiques. However, it is easy to overlook other items; such as, jewellery, pictures, books, CDs and clothing. To avoid making this mistake, it is recommended that - before purchasing Home Contents Insurance – you add up, roughly, how much you have spent over the years on all of the items in your home. It will then be obvious as to which possessions do not hold any particular value – although, with particular items of furniture, jewellery and pictures it is best to ensure that their worth has not increased since you purchased them. This will then give you a realistic indication as to how much you should insure your homes contents for.
To ensure that you have all of your valuables correctly covered by your policy, it is a good idea to make yourself a list of all of your prized possessions. It is recommended that you start with the basics and then add any more personal possessions:
- All household items, such as furniture and curtains – or any other item that is freestanding.
- Electronic equipment, such as televisions, hi-fis, video/DVD players and PCs.
- Easily damaged items, such as mirrors, glass furniture and other fragile objects.
- Items that have a high risk of being stolen, such as jewellery, antiques and pictures.
- Business equipment, for example; fax-machines, computers and filing cabinets.
- Garden equipment, such as garden furniture, barbeques and children's toys.
- Other potentially expensive items, such as plates and cutlery.
- Temporary items, such as Wedding and Christmas presents.
